Brits advised to check insurance policies this Christmas

Shoppers are expected to collectively spend up to £40 billion on presents this Christmas, but are advised to ensure they’re covered by their insurance.

A survey by Gocompare.com revealed that the majority of insurers – 86 per cent – offered additional contents cover over the Christmas period. However, not all policies add this automatically, so customers should check that they are sufficiently covered.

Accidental damage cover may also come in useful throughout the festive season, with additional friends and family coming to stay and the possibility of a few drink spillages. The survey found that nearly every insurer – 98 per cent – offered accidental damage, but only 15 per cent offered it as standard.

Ben Wilson, home insurance expert at Gocompare.com, explained that most insurance policies will factor in the rise in the value of your contents over the Christmas period, but it was still important to be conscientious.

“Most policies…provide some sort of increased cover over the Christmas period. However, policies do vary, and some will require you to contact your insurer to inform them that you would like this additional cover,” he added.
