Car insurance premiums climb for young women

The average cost of car insurance for young women drivers saw a significant increase during the first quarter of 2013.

According to the latest Confused.com/Towers Watson Car Insurance Price Index, premiums for female motorists between the ages of 17 and 20 soared by 20.7 per cent year-on-year to £2,256.

Meanwhile, males of the same age bracket enjoyed record year-on-year decreases of 21.6 per cent, bringing the average cost of comprehensive car insurance down to £736, £80 cheaper than this time last year.

Gemma Stanbury, head of car insurance at Confused.com, said following the introduction of the EU Gender Directive at the end of 2012, there is evidence the insurance industry has reacted to this legislation at the start of this year.

“Our advice to drivers is simple – with gender neutral pricing now having taken full effect, the need to shop around for the cheapest car insurance deal has never been greater, for both men and women,” she continued.

The EU Gender Directive was rolled out despite the fact young women drivers are statistically less likely to make an insurance claim than their male counterparts.
