It is a good idea for owners to make sure they get their caravan insured, it has been noted.
Tim Shallcross, head of policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists – which has more than 100,000 members – explained people need to get this protection in addition to informing their car insurer that they are set to tow a tourer.
Mr Shallcross observed a registration initiative for caravans has been up and running for some time, adding: “Make sure the caravan that you’re buying is on that scheme, make sure that it is registered and registered with you being the keeper.”
Individuals looking to take a tourer on the road with them are likely to need the right equipment in order to do so safely and legally.
Mr Shallcross noted insurance providers will insist drivers have a towbar that is correctly fitted, while it is essential they also have all the necessary mirrors positioned in the right places.
He explained failure to do this could result in a policy becoming invalid if a caravan owner was to crash and later make an insurance claim .
