People should make sure that their valuables are safe and secure, according to one home insurance firm.
Research by Age Concern Insurance Services reveals that 47 per cent of people keep their most valuable items in a drawer, reports the Andover Advertiser.
According to Richard Dorrell, a spokesperson for the charity, people should do more to make it harder for would-be thieves to steal items.
He said: “By keeping valuables in a locked, safe place belongings will be kept secure.
“We would also advise people to check their home insurance policies and specify any items over £2,000 – this will provide peace of mind that their possessions are insured to the correct value, in case the worst happens.”
People should always try and keep valuables out of sight and never leave a spare key concealed outside anywhere, he added.
Recently, Defaqto warned that people should make sure their home insurance policy gives them sufficient cover for garden items.
