Now that access to the continent is becoming increasingly easier, a road safety organisation has raised concern over the number of accidents involving British motorists .
David Williams, chief executive of Gem Motoring Assist, said that for many people, driving abroad is now a “year-round activity”.
However, car insurance customers and other road users could be at risk if they are unable to cope with the “different driving conditions abroad” and other countries’ regulations, he suggested.
“There are 45 major differences in the road laws between member states in the EU and people are just not aware of them,” Mr Williams claimed.
It is not simply a case of “driving on the wrong side of the road”, he warned.
Car insurance provider Cornhill Direct recently stated that more than 75 per cent of motorists it surveyed admitted that they were “apprehensive” of driving in another country.
