Some 2.5 million UK residents are planning to head abroad over the festive period, according to figures from a travel insurance provider.
During this season, Britons will take collectively £727 million worth of Christmas presents on holiday with them, a Halifax Travel Insurance study has revealed.
These holidaymakers have been advised to ensure that they have adequate travel insurance to cover any potential losses, as claims for lost baggage rise by 48 per cent after the holidays, the statistics show.
Reasons cited by Britons for heading abroad include avoiding the British weather, escaping “Christmas-mania” and dodging the festive cooking.
Vicky Watson, of Halifax Travel Insurance, commented: “Each January we see a substantial rise in claims for Christmas presents that have been lost, stolen or damaged abroad.
“Travellers must make sure that they have adequate travel insurance to cover replacement costs before travelling.”
James Harrison, the chief executive of insurancewide.com, recently advised Britons to find a travel insurance policy with the best cover – not necessarily the cheapest available – before heading on holiday.
