According to a new survey by American Express travel insurance, gap year travel among the over-30s is now more popular than ever. Research by the company shows that in the UK, about 90 per cent of those planning a gap year travel break are aged over 30.
It appears that silver travel is set to overtake student travel as nearly 40 per cent of gap year travel is done by the over 55s.
However, Joanne Field of American Express travel insurance warns that the younger backpackers should follow the example of their older travel companions when it comes to travel insurance.
She says, "whilst the over 25's taking a gap break are unlikely to be on such tight budgets as younger travellers, it can still be tempting to try and skimp on insurance. Not all policies are the same and it really pays to do your homework and carefully consider the level of cover in relation to your plans."
