As many as one in 12 UK holidaymakers will be heading to foreign climes without travel insurance, according to a study.
The total value of the trips not covered by travel insurance will be £4.19 billion, states the research.
Sainsbury's Bank, which carried out the survey, also claims that personal belongings up to £2.07 billion will be taken out of the UK without travel insurance protection.
Robert O’May, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury’s, Bank said: "It’s staggering that despite quality travel insurance … some 2.61 million people will risk losing a fortune this year by having no cover"
Mr O'May adds to remind UK residents of the importance of remembering that the new government EHIC forms, which have replaced the E111, are not a travel insurance policy.
He continues that the forms provide emergency medical care only, which in some destinations may be very limited.
The growing trend in activity holidays could lead to more injuries suffered while on holiday, many of which may not be covered by travel insurance, AXA insurance has claimed.
Around one million Britons claimed on their travel insurance for having suffered accident or injury in the last five years, according to the company.
