More people opted for environmentally friendly cars last year, with a 74 per cent year-on-year increase reported in hybrid vehicle registrations, a leading car insurance company reveals.
More Than also found that one in six drivers in the UK are considering trading in their regular vehicle for an electric or hybrid car if fuel prices continue their upward trend.
Hybrid cars combine two power sources for energy. In most cases, an electric motor is the primary energy source, with fuel used as a backup when energy runs out, More Than explains.
The insurance company points out that Hollywood stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Orlando Bloom and George Clooney have already made the change.
It goes on to predict that there will be almost a billion motorists driving hybrid cars in 15 years' time.
"Given the growing concern about global warming, it's encouraging that so many motorists are considering changing their driving habits," comments David Pitt, the head of motor insurance at More Than.
He adds that he is convinced that increased awareness will result in more innovation from the motoring industry, combined with government incentives to encourage drivers to adopt a more eco-friendly approach.
More Than offers car insurance, pet insurance, travel insurance, life insurance and a credit card.
