Elton John illness triggers insurance payout

Sir Elton John’s recent life-threatening bout of appendicitis has triggered an insurance payout.

The London singer had originally planned a 14-date tour this summer, but this has had to be scrapped because of his illness.

But because Sir Elton has liability insurance, promoters and organisers will have the opportunity to either cancel the postponed gigs and receive a full refund, or wait until the Pinball Wizards-performer is ready to get back on stage again, according to the Daily Mirror.

Because Sir Elton’s planned tour would have seen him play in front of around 200,000 people – many of whom paid more than £100 for a ticket – the singer’s insurers could have to pay out more than £10 million.

A source close to the Londoner reportedly told the Mirror: “Artists have insurance for the promoters’ liability. Elton is insured so they get their money back or they can have another concert. It has all been taken care of and will be rescheduled.”

Sir Elton is on a course of antibiotics to treat a secondary infection and is expected to make a full recovery.
