Community schemes could help reduce home insurance claims

A close knit community in Lancashire has been working together in a bid to prevent criminal activity such as antisocial behaviour and burglary which can lead to property owners making a home insurance claim.

The residents of Padiham have formed a Neighbourhood Watch Group which distributes information advising home owners in the area on how to protect their properties from criminals and avoid having to claim on their home insurance policy.

Charlotte Broadhurst, a Police Community Support Officer commented that the scheme could also help stop attacks on cars by increasing vigilance and awareness in the community, as “a number of these types of crime are avoidable if crime prevention measures are taken”.

The police advise keeping valuable items and belongings out of sight and making sure all windows, doors and other entry points are firmly closed and securely locked. These measures could act as deterrent and prevent burglars from striking.
