Britons have been reminded of the need to plan their Bonfire Night celebrations carefully to avoid causing any potentially costly damage by accident.
New research from Santander Insurance shows that nearly two million British households plan to hold at-home displays to celebrate Guy Fawkes Night today (November 5th 2012).
However, the study also showed that people have been left with a £1.5 billion bill as a result of damage to their homes and property caused over the period Halloween to Bonfire Night period in the past.
As such, homeowners have been urged to take all the necessary precautions, including reading instructions carefully, maintaining a safe distance from fireworks and taking out home insurance.
Richard Al-Dabbagh at Santander Insurance said: “We’re urging families planning at-home displays to ensure they have plenty of outdoor space and plan well in advance to avoid accidents to themselves or their property.”
This comes after research from Halifax Home Insurance last week revealed that insurance claims tend to generally increase in the UK as the evenings grow darker in the latter months of the year.
