Many top holiday destinations are also hotspots for illness, accidents and crime, a travel insurance provider warns.
Thailand, Mexico and South Africa are the most likely countries to “pose a risk” to travellers, according to Norwich Union’s travel insurance claims database.
However, the study revealed that most UK travellers heading abroad don’t need to make a travel insurance claim, as they have a “trouble-free” trip.
Dawn McMullan, travel insurance product manager at Norwich Union, said: “The majority of holidays go off without a hitch, but we would advise everyone to take the same precautions abroad as they would here.
“Our research shows that you need to take a little extra care in certain countries, and of course make sure you are adequately covered by travel insurance.”
Ms McMullan adds that often traveller can forget about risks while they are enjoying themselves.
Norwich Union has also compiled a list of tips to travellers to stay safe and avoid a hefty travel insurance claim, such as taking care of belongings and staying healthy by avoiding drinking local water.
AA Travel Insurance recently gave travellers similar tips, warning them to stay safe and healthy.
