Parents count travel insurance cost of teen jaunts, expert claims

Parents are expected to count the cost of their teenager’s travel insurance, as A-level results will spark a holiday frenzy, according to an expert.

Over 100,000 students who apply for university are not accepted at this time of year, many of whom will take gap-years, claims American Express Travel Insurance.

August and September are therefore the “key sales periods” for gap-year travel insurance policies, which parents will often purchase for their offspring.

Joanne Field, marketing manager at American Express Insurance Services, comments: “Like any other element of gap travel, insurance should be researched and planned as terms and conditions can vary widely.”

The company also offers tips to parents to ensure that the chosen travel insurance policy will cover all necessary eventualities.

For example, the company warns that teenagers planning to work while away should be covered by their travel insurance policy, although often manual labour could invalidate this.

Extreme sports and hopping between destinations are other activities which could invalidate a travel insurance policy.

Recent research from esure indicates that many young travellers are also carrying valuable gadgets with them, which could result in a hefty travel insurance claim if lost or stolen.
