Male drivers more likely to have driving conviction

Male motorists are more likely to have a conviction for driving while under the influence of drugs or alcohol than their female counterparts, a new study from MoneySupermarket.com has revealed.

Research carried out by the car insurance website revealed over 55,000 men have a previous offence for getting behind the wheel after consuming the substance, representing a rate of 6.8 per 1,000 votes.

Compared to just under 16,000 women who have done the same, the figure highlights the extent to which many motorists are endangering their lives and those of other road users.

The company’s MoneySupermarket Monitor on Car Insurance initiative revealed the total number of drink and drugs convictions declared on car insurance quotes for main drivers was 76,968.

Commenting on the figures, Kevin Pratt – the company’s cover expert – said: “Our convictions data presents a stark reminder to motorists that they should not drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”
