Telemetric technology could reduce car insurance costs

The introduction of telematics technology has seen car insurance holders adopt better driving behaviour.

This is according to research from the Co-operative Bank, which found that 35 per cent of customers using the smartbox scheme achieved the top rating of five.

As well as this, less than five per cent are demonstrating poor technique while behind the wheel, which could lessen the chance of premiums increasing due to accidents.

Since the programme was launched, 97 per cent of males have been rewarded with a reduction in their cover costs, while 92 per cent of women have also benefitted from a drop in expenses.

David Neave, director of general insurance for The Co-operative - which operates more than 4,800 retail outlets and employs over 106,000 people - stated: "Our data shows that the vast majority of our customers are responding to our carrot rather than stick approach and are improving their driving skills because they are rewarded for doing so."

Some 82 per cent of 17 to 25-year-olds got the top score for not breaking speed limits, but only 13 were awarded top marks for braking and accelerating.
