Skiers planning a winter getaway have been reminded of the need for adequate travel insurance before heading abroad.
Churchill Travel Insurance warned vacationers feeling the pinch in the current uncertain economic environment must avoid the temptation to scrimp on such cover in the coming months.
The organisation explained that while a European Health Insurance Card entitles residents in the European Union (EU) to necessary medical care when visiting a fellow EU country, this does not cover all other related costs - such as repatriation to the UK and air ambulance rescue.
It pointed out many ski resorts only have privately-owned rescue companies and medical facilities.
Annette Fox, spokesperson for Churchill Travel Insurance - part of Churchill Insurance, which was launched in 1989 and was acquired by the Royal Bank of Scotland Group in 2003 - noted: "Don't underestimate the need for travel insurance, particularly if you're going on the type of holiday where there is a risk of injury ."
She added it might be a wise move for those with annual protection to check before travelling that winter sports are covered by the policy.
