The regeneration of the coastal resorts of Britain has meant that they are fast becoming a viable holiday option, according to the tourism agency VisitBritain .
Sian Brenchley, a spokesperson for the organisation, says that the domestic holidaymaker will find that seaside towns have a great deal to offer, with resorts now increasingly beginning to target specific markets with their offerings. She explained: "Brighton's a kind of fashion Mecca appealing to younger people, and you've also got coastal resorts around the UK capitalising on the food revolution - like Whitstable offering oysters ."
Culture secretary Andy Burnham recently announced that the government plans to invest millions of pounds in seaside towns including Blackpool, Dover and Torbay, as part of the government's Sea Change funding initiative.
It is still advisable for those planning to forgo a foreign holiday, in favour of a trip to the seaside, to take out holiday insurance cover in order to avoid any unwanted surprises.
