Young men are paying more for their car insurance as a result of their image, according to moneysupermarket.com.
Research conducted by the company revealed that 18-year-old men pay an average of 79 per cent more for cover on a vehicle than women of the same age.
Head of car insurance at the site, Steve Sweeney, suggests that male drivers are often charged more for their premium until they reach their 50s. He said: “Young male drivers traditionally bear the brunt of a ‘boy racer’ reputation through the cost of their premiums. In my opinion, females are charged less because they are perceived to be more mature and safer as motorists, with men seen as a bigger risk on the roads.”
Recently, the comparison site found that one in 20 drivers under the age of 35 had staged an accident in order to make a fraudulent claim from their insurance company .
