A poll conducted by Sainsburys Home Insurance has revealed that in recent months many Brits are performing home repairs themselves in order to save money during the credit crunch .
The survey found that almost two-thirds of adults in the UK have carried out some kind of DIY task around the home in the last 12 months, rather than paying a professional to do the job.
However, Joan Mallon, Sainsbury’s Home Insurance manager, has warned budding home-improvers to check that they have accidental damage cover in place before starting work. She said: “DIY is a great way to save money and the sense of achievement when the job’s done can be tremendous, so don’t ruin it by exposing yourself to calamity because the right insurance isn’t in place.”
Recently, figures published by Sainsburys Bank showed that between 2007 and 2008, there was increase of 53 per cent in the number of loans taken out to fund home improvements .
