UK pensioners are turning to “risky pursuits” such as hot-air ballooning, safaris and mountain climbing, according to a travel insurance study.
Some six per cent of “golden aged packers” are thrill-seeking on their travels with adventure holidays, while many more are trying camping and road trips, the research from AA Travel Insurance shows.
Also, ten per cent would like to, or have already learned to fly a plane.
More than one third of over 60s holidaymakers have had an extended holiday in the last 12 months.
Furthermore, 27 per cent have been on holiday more than three times in the same period, possibly meaning that annual or multi-trip travel insurance policies would offer the best value.
Alison Crossley, AA Travel Insurance manager, said: “Exotic destinations are much more accessible now and older people aren’t letting age get in the way of having a good time and exploring the world.
“It’s great that they’re keen to try adventurous activities, but like their younger counterparts they need to ensure they’re adequately protected whilst they’re abroad.”
Hollywood heart-throb Harrison Ford is setting an example to adventure-loving golden oldies by appearing in Indiana Jones 4, due out in 2008, filming at the age of 64.
