Brits who are planning on booking a summer holiday have been advised not to put off buying adequate travel insurance.
According to Gocompare.com, while the majority of people purchase insurance for medical reasons or to protect their luggage, travel insurance can also cover you against events affecting you before you go on holiday.
It reports that one-third (34 per cent) of claims made by UK holidaymakers in 2012 were to do with cancellations.
As travellers are only protected for events they didn’t know about before purchasing insurance, the sooner they buy the policy, the more likely it is they will be covered in case something goes wrong before they go on holiday.
Research showed that cancellation cover comes as standard with the vast majority (96 per cent) of policies. It allows the holidaymaker to reclaim the cost of their trip in case a situation arises which means they cannot travel.
Caroline Lloyd, travel insurance expert at Gocompare.com, said: “It’s a good idea to take out your travel cover soon after you book your holiday, rather than leaving it until just before you go.”
