Home insurance firm claims burglaries do not increase in winter

AA Insurance has told customers that the risk of burglary does not increase in the winter months – despite popular beliefs to the contrary.

Statistics published by the home insurance provider reveal that there is no correlation between longer, darker nights and increased robberies.

Indeed, claims data indicates that burglaries only account for an estimated 12 per cent of all home insurance claims – regardless of the season.

Director of AA Insurance Simon Douglas acknowledged that it is natural for a homeowner to believe that they may be at risk when it is easier to sneak around unnoticed.

However, he underlined the fact that if a person will have trouble seeing a robber, it is unlikely the robber will be able to see where they are going too clearly.

“The important thing to remember is that burglary is largely opportunistic and thieves often take advantage of open windows and unlocked doors,” Mr Douglas commented.
