Brits advised to check home emergency cover

Not all home contents insurance packages include emergency cover, according to a new study.

Gocompare.com said that out of the 312 home contents insurance policies it reviewed, 55 (one-sixth) offered home emergency cover as standard. This becomes an important issue in the winter months according to Ben Wilson, gocompare.com’s home insurance expert.

Mr Wilson posed the question: “How many times, as the temperatures tumble, have you heard a friend or colleague say – ‘my boiler has packed in’? Having an insurance policy that covers all of these eventualities will be a great weight off homeowners’ minds.”

He advised concerned customers to check their policy or contact their insurance provider. Gocompare.com’s research proved that it was easy to add home emergency cover to a home contents insurance package, as 151 of the 312 insurance deals it surveyed did offer emergency cover as an additional extra.

Mr Wilson commented that being burdened with a large plumbing bill to repair a broken boiler would be an unwanted Christmas gift for anyone, and advised customers to be proactive in sorting out their emergency cover.
