US insurance company creates NI jobs

AllState Corporation is creating 650 jobs at its technology division in Northern Ireland.

The large US insurance giant said it has already hired 200 staff and would recruit the remaining 450 employees in 2016, according to the Financial Times.

Invest Northern Ireland supported the move with £4.5 million in grant aid, with the agency hoping this feat is matched with similar investments at this autumn’s planned investment summit, which will follow the G8 conference in the capital.

Peter Robinson, first minister in Northern Ireland, said: “This announcement of hundreds of new high quality jobs by a top Fortune 100 company sends out a clear and unequivocal message to international investors to have confidence in Northern Ireland.”

The employment boost will widely be seen as good news in the nation, which has been hit by a deep recession that was worsened by recent civil unrest sparked by the removal of the Union flag from Belfast City Hall.

Youth employment in Northern Ireland currently stands at record high levels, with a quarter of those aged 18 to 24 jobless.
