The government’s decision to allow car insurance firms to access driver details held by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency from 2014 has been warmly welcomed.
Announcing the details, Patrick McLoughlin, secretary of state for transport, said the move will help to cut fraudulent claims and will save policy holders around £100 a year.
And a poll of 17,883 people conducted by the AA found that 92 per cent are in favour of the move.
Of that number, 89 per cent said that they would have no problem with their insurer obtaining their driving licence number if it helped to cut fraud.
Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, said: “This shows that drivers are fed up with a fraudulent minority trying to get cheaper insurance by telling lies at their expense.”
He added that almost a quarter (23 per cent) of motorists wrongly declare their driving history to insurers when shopping around for a policy, with some hiding convictions and disqualifications.
