A new report has shown low levels of trust and satisfaction among members of the public in regards to insurance price comparison sites.
Which? launched an investigation into the industry after receiving complaints and found only 32 of its members said they believe the results of the websites are accurate.
The consumer watchdog asked 6,000 of its subscribers to rate eleven of the most popular comparison sites and MoneyExpert.com and MoneyFacts.com were ranked as the best – but only 46 per cent said these two sites were good enough for their needs.
Which?’s survey also found participants normally visit more than one website before making a purchasing decision and 13 per cent revealed they have to use four or more different sites before they get the best price.
Richard Lloyd, Which? executive director, said: “We’ve found that many people just don’t trust comparison sites to get them the best deal and from the results of our research it looks like they are right to be sceptical.”
He added the websites claim a high level of accuracy but often don’t get consumers the best deal.
Mr Lloyd advised those looking for bargains to use multiple sites and said it is often beneficial to go straight to a company in order to negotiate a better deal – skipping the price comparison process altogether.
