Mountain rescue service benefits from new insurance

The Mountain Rescue Committee of Scotland (MRCofS) has claimed insurance provided to its squads by the police has been bolstered since all forces were unified.

It had previously been the case that Scotland ran a number of different regional law enforcement services. But changes brought in by the devolved parliament led to the creation of a single, unified police force across all of the nation.

Now, MRCofS said it has benefited from this decision because insurance is more thorough for personal injury claims that may previously have been launched against individual rescue units.

However, cover is only given to workers at MRCofS when they are called into action by the police and is not available for local minor operations.

A statement from the service read: “Police Scotland’s revised personal accident cover arrangements for all Scottish mountain rescue teams are now very positive and are welcomed by the MRCofS.”

Some search and rescue teams around the UK do not have adequate insurance and this could mean they are liable for any injuries that occur in day-to-day operations.
