Potholes cause car insurance claims to soar

Car insurance claims made by UK motorists for pothole-related damage have more than doubled in the last 12 months.

This is according to new figures released by the AA, which revealed that in the past four weeks, potholes have caused problems for drivers of an estimated 1,000 vehicles and twice the number of claims recorded during the same period in 2012 have been made.

Director of AA insurance Simon Douglas said all motorists who had called the firm reported ruined tyres, while one-fifth also noted damage to their wheels.

He added: “That’s bad enough, but those making insurance claims are saying that there has been serious damage to suspension, steering and bodywork as well.”

The expert explained drivers often seek help from a highway authority – either the Highways Agency or a similar local body – to make a claim for the inconveniences caused by potholes.

However, over the past year, compensation claims and extra staff costs in dealing with potholes have set local authorities back around £35 million and the AA stated this figure will soar if the necessary investment is not made.
