Customers urged to protect themselves against flood risks

In light of recent flood warnings, customers are being advised to ensure they have adequate home and contents insurance.

After the recent flood warnings and gales, Moneysupermarket.com is urging customers to firstly protect their houses and belongings, and secondly to establish what their insurance policy covers them for.

Kevin Pratt, insurance expert at Moneysupermarket.com, said: “People in ‘at risk’ households should check the details of their buildings and contents cover to understand what actions they should take if flooding strikes.”

Mr Pratt said this was important because in the case of a flood, customers might need to claim on both policies, so an understanding of how much would need to be paid upfront in excesses was vital.

The general public was also advised to take expensive portable items upstairs, particularly if they live in an area at high risk of flooding. Other advice included stocking up on sandbags, protecting sentimental items which cannot be replaced and checking that outside drains are free from blockages.

Insurance policies could rise when they are up for renewal as a result of the recent severe weather, Mr Pratt warned, and he suggested shopping around to find the best deal.
