Last year’s changes to the way car insurance quotes were generated have benefited both men and women, according to new research.
Since December 21st 2012, car insurers have not been allowed to take gender into account when calculating premiums. Gocompare.com surveyed over seven million quotes from its website and nearly every age group of both men and women are now enjoying cheaper premiums.
The overall reduction is £146, meaning that the average quote was £820, compared with £966 in November 2012. This worked out as £205 cheaper for men, and £59 cheaper for women.
The only group to experience their premiums rising were women aged 17-20, but that was only by £9. Men in the same age group benefited most from the change in law, with their average premium now costing £2,358, compared with £3,293; a reduction of nearly £1,000.
Scott Kelly, Gocompare.com’s head of motoring, said: “No one was entirely sure how prices and products would be affected when it first came in last December, but with the exception of young female drivers, these reductions in premiums will be very welcome indeed.”
