Brits are being warned to ensure they are ready for a potential onslaught of wintry weather by making sure their insurance policies are up to date.
Moneysupermarket.com is advising the general public to be extra-vigilant while driving, and make sure they have adequate car insurance in case of breakdown. The company advises drivers to regularly check their cars before driving, and monitor their oil levels and tyre tread depth levels.
Kevin Pratt, car insurance expert at Moneysupermarket.com, said: “A big freeze may be just around the corner so drivers should ready themselves and their vehicles for ice and snow before taking to the roads.”
In addition, cold temperatures can have a damaging effect on houses, and the insurance company is urging people to check that their home insurance policy covers them for frozen and burst pipes, as well as boiler breakdown.
Mr Pratt added that boiler breakdown exclusions to policies are common, especially if the boiler is over a certain age or if there are gas leaks from any pipes or gas-fired appliances. He advised checking the small print to ensure no-one is “caught out in the cold” this winter.
