With one in five Brits claiming they have been victims of burglary, securing a home insurance policy is more important than ever.
According to new research from Confused.com, people need to be more imaginative when hiding their most valued possessions from thieves, as 13 per cent of consumers are placing belongings in their sock drawers, the most stereotypical place.
In addition, despite the fact that on average individuals forecast their home contents are worth over £38,000, they are happy to hide valuables in unsafe locations like under the bed (nine per cent) or under the sink (six per cent).
Gareth Lane, head of home insurance at the price comparison website, said the study is proof British people need to be smarter when protecting their belongings.
“On the unfortunate occasions where [thieves] gain entrance, we need to think really carefully on how we can prevent them from locating our favourite possessions,” he remarked.
However, nearly half of burglary victims (45 per cent) who took part in the research have since gone to the effort to secure their properties, by installing security alarms and extra window and door locks.
