Call for lower insurance premiums for staff with good sight

Employers are seeking lower company car insurance premiums for staff with good eyesight, new research has stated.

A survey carried out by Specsavers Corporate Eyecare has revealed 71 per cent of bosses think premiums should go down if they can give evidence their workers have recently passed a full eye examination.

Nearly three-quarters (74 per cent) also said free sight tests and competitive pricing would be the deciding factor in choosing a particular insurance company.

Jim Lythgow, director of strategic alliances for Specsavers Corporate Eyecare, said he believes motorists who have excellent eyesight are safer on the roads than those who do not.

“If insurance companies can encourage employers to test the eyesight of their staff that drive then this must be a good thing,” he continued.

This comes after the Health and Safety Executive claimed an employer’s duty of care extends to all aspects of work, driving included.

According to Jon Sellors, group head of thought leadership for RSA, fleet operators who adopt a systematic approach to driver eye tests will be able to obtain lower insurance premiums for their staff.
