Flooding highlights insurance need

Flooding seen in parts of the UK this weekend has highlighted the need for owners to protect against such incidents through the right insurance.

Aidan Kerr, head of property at the Association of British Insurers (ABI), noted such unexpected occurrences show why people take out the relevant cover.

Mr Kerr explained individuals whose homes have been affected by rising water levels following the recent heavy bouts of rainfall should contact their insurer sooner rather than later.

This will not only allow them to appeal for help and assistance, but also facilitate the quicker processing of any claims.

Mr Kerr stated: “Insurers understand how traumatic and disruptive flooding is and will be well geared up to deal with claims and help customers recover as quickly as possible.”

The ABI noted there are a number of precautions at-risk homeowners can take when the weather forecast looks particularly severe.

These include securing items such as ladders in gardens that may be susceptible to high winds, checking whether it is safe to use electricity, gas and water supplies and having emergency contact details – including phoned numbers for insurers, local authorities and utility companies – to hand.
