Car flood damage to increase insurance claims

Car insurance claims in the UK are set to increase markedly as a result of many vehicles being damaged by the recent floods.

This is according to AA Insurance, which estimated insurers could be facing claims of up to £14 million for vehicles written off due to the hazardous weather conditions.

It was also noted that some drivers could be placing their safety at risk by getting behind the wheel of a motor that was immersed in water but appeared to have not suffered any damage, as dangerous faults may go unnoticed.

AA Insurance – whose car insurance is arranged by Automobile Association Insurance Services Limited – expressed concerns that some of these affected vehicles could end up on the used car market.

Simon Douglas, director of the group, explained flood damage can result in a car’s catalytic converter and exhaust system life being reduced considerably, while brakes can be affected, starter motors might fail and wheel bearings may seize up.

Mr Douglas stated: “Water can seriously affect electrical and electronic systems including the airbags, which might go off unexpectedly – or not deploy when they should.”
