Winter buildings insurance claims rose in 2011

The number of building insurance claims made due to hazardous weather in winter 2011 rose markedly when compared with the same season 12 months earlier.

This is according to new findings from MoneySupermarket, which showed these instances were 56 per cent greater last year than they were at the end of 2010.

It was demonstrated that 55.9 per cent of all buildings insurance claims made during winter 2011 came as a result of the poor weather conditions – significantly more than the 35.3 per cent a year earlier.

Julie Fisher, head of home insurance at the price comparison website – which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority – explained it is essential homeowners consider their buildings and contents protection options, adding: “With the storms of December 2011, coupled with the recent flooding we have seen across parts of the UK, homeowners need to be increasingly on their guard against potential damage.”

Ms Fisher observed that while winter weather in the UK may not be as extreme as other countries, people should not get complacent when it comes to properly covering their properties .
