Caravan insurance policies tend to differ with regard to protection details when tourers are borrowed by friends and family.
This is the finding of new research from Defaqto, which showed 12 per cent of deals will not offer cover if a caravan is used by a relation, while 15 per cent will take this into account as an optional extra.
It was demonstrated that 73 per cent provide this protection as standard, but 57 per cent do not offer any such deals when a friend takes charge of the vehicle.
Mike Powell, insight analyst for general insurance at Defaqto – which has been operating since 1994 – said: “It would be a bitter pill to swallow if you lent your touring caravan to a friend and then found that your insurance wouldn’t pay out for any damage.”
The industry figure observed it is therefore important for people to fully understand the coverage offered by their policies, as well as to take note of any limitations.
He added policy definitions can vary between providers, so consumers would be wise to look closely before signing up to a deal.
