Telematics could help young drivers keep their car insurance costs down.
Steve Chilton, claims manager at Swinton Group, has noted the monitoring system relays real-time information to an insurance provider with regard to driver performance.
This includes how fast the motorist travels, the times of day they usually hit the road and how forceful they are on the breaks.
Mr Chilton explained those who sign up to the initiative usually benefit from a sizeable upfront discount and then further reductions may be made over a three-month assessment period that rewards road users depending on how good their driving is.
He stated: “If more people get behind the wheel and start driving, they need to consider the overall costs and insurance is only one part of owning and driving a motor vehicle .”
Other suggestions offered by Mr Chilton for ways in which young drivers can keep their insurance costs down include using a vehicle with a smaller engine and restricting their mileage.
He added there are many places young road users can go to get help with any insurance issues they face, such as a broker .
