Severe weather causes car insurance claims surge

Severe weather over the last few weeks has caused a surge in car insurance claims throughout the UK, it has been noted.

AA Insurance estimated more than 14,000 vehicles have been seriously damaged or written off as a result of the hazardous conditions seen over the two weeks since June 28th.

In this time, parts of the UK have suffered from flooding, while giant hailstones have fallen across other regions.

It was estimated that £35 million worth of damage to motors has been seen in the 14-day period, with a storm in Leicestershire alone leading to more than 200 claims.

Simon Douglas, director of AA Insurance, noted heavy hailstorms can ruin a vehicle, adding: “If it has perhaps hundreds of dents in the roof, bonnet and boot panels it will probably be uneconomical to repair it.”

Mr Douglas observed there have been several recent examples of motors being written off as a result of such downpours.

He added cars affected by flood water might also be taken off the road by insurers, as electronic systems may be damaged, while brakes and engine components could also be impacted.
