Insurance should be considered when making home improvements

People need to keep insurance requirements in mind when deciding to carry out home improvements, it has been suggested.

Jason Orme, editor at Homebuilding and Renovating magazine – a publication aimed at self-builders that includes exclusive news and updates on building regulations – explained it is crucial individuals inform their insurer of their plans prior to attempting any DIY tasks.

Mr Orme noted homeowners stand to lose their initial investment and any added value if they fail to keep their provider up to date with any alterations made.

The comments come in response to new research from MoneySupermarket.com, which found many householders are failing to update their insurance when upgrading their dwellings with loft conversions and extensions.

Mr Orme explained carrying out home improvements will not necessarily result in their insurance premiums being increased.

He observed such movement depends on the insurance provider and the details of the DIY project, adding: “Certainly in the cases of smaller alterations and ones that don’t add space, then there is no guarantee necessarily that it will add anything to the premium whatsoever.”
