Jason Orme, editor at Homebuilding and Renovating magazine – a publication aimed at self-builders that includes exclusive news and updates on building regulations – explained it is crucial individuals inform their insurer of their plans prior to attempting any DIY tasks.

Mr Orme noted homeowners stand to lose their initial investment and any added value if they fail to keep their provider up to date with any alterations made.

The comments come in response to new research from, which found many householders are failing to update their insurance when upgrading their dwellings with loft conversions and extensions.

Mr Orme explained carrying out home improvements will not necessarily result in their insurance premiums being increased.
