High travel insurance claims for US and Canada

A high number of travel insurance claims have been recorded for skiers and snowboarders in the US and Canada.

This is according to new research from Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance, which showed the two countries are the most expensive locations for people to have a winter sports injury, with the average cost of such an incident amounting to £2,863.

At the other end of the scale, Bulgaria – when compared with other top destinations offering this kind of holiday – was found to be the nation with the lowest typical claim value, with this figure standing at £493.

David Barrett, manager of the company, warned people should not be tempted to reduce their expenditure by deciding to risk heading overseas without adequate protection in place.

He stated: “As our research shows, medical treatment for winter sports-related injuries can be hugely expensive, particularly if you need to be transported off a mountain by helicopter.”

In addition to the US and Canada, considerable travel insurance payment increases were also recorded in Austria and France – rising seven per cent and 13 per cent respectively on the values seen during the previous season.
