Putting animals on a diet could reduce pet insurance claims

Humans may not be the only ones that have overindulged over the festive season and one animal charity suggests that pets might need to go on a diet too.

The Blue Cross has published advice which states a healthy diet and plenty of exercise could help prevent illnesses that could result in pet insurance claims.

Chief vet at the organisation Mark Bossley said: ” Obesity is one of the biggest problems facing pets in the UK and the consequences to their health can be very serious. Professionals can help advise people on the best nutrition and activities for all different kinds of animals.”

Mr Bossley’s comments are in response to a poll where 63 per cent of pet owners reported that their furry friends had been sick after gorging on too many leftovers. The RSPCA states obesity in dogs and cats can cause illnesses such as high blood pressure, cancer, respiratory diseases and diabetes .
