New car insurance scheme to be piloted in Northern Ireland

A new scheme which will enable motorists to have their car insurance premiums determined by their driving performance is to be piloted in Northern Ireland.

Under the scheme, a data recorder will be fitted to the vehicle to assess the driving habits of motorists. It will also be able to pinpoint the location of the car .

According to Autoline Insurance, the company behind the device, a recent European Court of Justice ruling means that from December 2012, gender will no longer be a consideration when assessing risk for insurance and will add to the soaring premiums drivers face already.

Caroline Currie, sales director at Autoline, said: “This is an entirely voluntary type of insurance package which could have huge repercussions for the insurance industry. With this scheme, drivers will no longer have to endure the current broad brush approach to insurance rating, as premiums will be based on individual driving skills.”
