Motorists should not shun breakdown assistance insurance over the bank holidays

With the Easter and May Bank Holidays almost upon us, motorists are being warned not to risk breaking down without breakdown assistance insurance .

Around 8 million motorists are expected to be on the roads during the Easter and May Bank Holidays and the Royal Wedding is likely to entice Brits to take a long holiday weekend break. However according to research conducted by Santander current accounts, over a million drivers don’t have car breakdown cover or roadside assistance .

The survey revealed that 14 per cent of the 8 million Brits planning a driving holiday over the bank holidays will not be covered if their car breaks down and could face a bill of £150 or more if they are stranded on the hard shoulder of the motorway and have to be towed home.

Gillian Almond, head of current accounts at Santander, said: “With two long weekends so close to each other it’s a great opportunity to get out on the road to visit family and friends or enjoy a driving holiday, but the fun could soon turn to tears if your car breaks down.”
