Some standard home insurance policies may not provide comprehensive cover

There can be significant variations in standard home insurance policies in terms of cover and it is advisable for property owners to shop around to find a policy that suits their individual needs, according to moneysupermarket.com.

The comparison site says consumers should never assume that a standard deal offers comprehensive cover . It analysed the cover offered from a number of providers and found that some of the policies do not include provisions for accidental damage, while others do not provide protection for possessions outside of the home .

Homeowners can, on average, expect to pay 143 per cent more for a premium deal, however this will provide them with many “essential details” such as alternative accommodation allowances, emergency cover and seasonal increases to cover periods like Christmas. Julie Owens of moneysupermarket.com said: “The most important thing to consider when buying home insurance is what type of cover will suit your circumstances.”
