Fortis Insurance UK has issued advice for its customers to help them reduce the chances of their homes being affected by problems with water systems .
The company told householders to ensure they have a plan in place should water escape and recommended that they regularly inspect their property’s plumbing, ensure ducts and tanks are properly insulated and keep the heating on when they go out so that pipes do not freeze.
The firm offers the guidance as it reveals that household insurance claims have risen amid the recent severe weather conditions and noted that the majority have been caused by escaping water, findings which are similar to those of M&S Home Insurance for the 2009 winter months.
The head of operations at Fortis’s household and travel claims division Gary Lobb commented: “The more households and businesses we can help to avoid an escape of water, the better it will be for our customers and the costs of insurance in the future.”
