Experts are warning that a frozen pond could lead to a pet insurance claim if owners fail to protect their dogs .
The RSPCA has issued some timely advice for owners with garden ponds, many of which are frozen over at this time of year and is advising dog owners to keep their pets well away from ponds and lakes that are iced over, noting that thin ice may break under a dog’s weight. Also, dogs paws should be checked regularly while walking in wintry conditions, as they could become impacted with snow and cause discomfort.
However, owners should not be discouraged from taking their dogs outside on chilly days as regular exercise has important health benefits. The charity also recommends putting out extra bedding for animals at this time of year, especially those living outdoors, while a shed or garage may provide additional shelter when the weather is very cold.
