Consumers who are concerned about their pets during the cold weather have been offered some guidance by Petplan .
Pets can be affected by freezing temperatures just as people are and so Petplan’s vet of the year, Ben Jones, has compiled a list of handy tips to help pet owners keep their animals healthy throughout the cold weather.
He said that keeping your four-legged friend’s paws clear of road grit is very important as it may dry out the paws and this can make them bleed. Also, dogs may also try to lick off the salt which can result in stomach problems .
Older animals need extra attention during cold nights so extra blankets will help to keep the chill out. Mr Jones added that animal companions are just as likely to lose their footing and slip on ice as people, so it is advisable to keep them off icy patches where they can injure themselves.
