Home insurer finds one in ten homeowners are without contents insurance

There are around one in ten homeowners in the UK who could be at risk of losing their valuables forever because they do not have any home contents cover at all, says Halifax Home Insurance .

According to recent research conducted by the bank, almost half of the respondents didn’t have any idea of how much their belongings were worth and a further three-quarters had never had an expert come and value their collectible or antique possessions.

David Rochester, head of underwriting at Halifax Home Insurance said: “In the event of theft, people would surely want some kind of compensation for their losses. We’d recommend anyone who has a potentially valuable collection to get it valued by an expert every two years and ensure that they obtain a dated copy of the valuation certificate.”

Sainsburys Home Insurance have calculated that the average British household contains £45,000 worth of valuables.
